| Abstract: | Sturmian sequences can be interpreted as symbolic dynamical system arising from billiard trajectories in a square. Recently, Smillie and Ulcigrai proved a remarkable combinatorial result: billiard sequences in a regular octagon have a very simple symbolic characterization using words, which, moreover, leads to a new type of continued fractions associated with Hecke group instead of modular group as in the case of a square. |
